Privacy, in plain words
NearMe is built to be useful, not nosy. Here is what it keeps, what it counts, and who else is involved.
What NearMe keeps about you
- Your account: your name, email address and profile picture (from Google, or one you choose), and a scrambled version of your password. Nobody, including the owner, can read your password.
- What you add: reports, True or False votes, comments, saved places and the points you earn.
- Searches: only how many you made each day, so the daily limit works. The words you search for are not saved on your account.
- Alerts near you (only if you turn them on): your position, rounded to about 100 metres, so NearMe can tell you about reports close to you. It is deleted the moment you turn alerts off.
- Star ratings: the stars and tags you give a place, with your account. To rate a place, NearMe checks that your phone location is near it at that moment. Only the distance is kept, never your position.
- Notifications: a code your phone or browser gives us so we can send you a notification. Turn notifications off and it is removed.
What NearMe counts anonymously
To learn how many people use NearMe and which parts help, the pages send short notes like "opened the app", "searched" or "installed". Each note carries a random code your browser made up, which lets the owner count people without knowing who they are.
- No name, email, IP address or location is attached.
- What you type in a search is never sent. At most, a note says a known category such as "fuel station" was used.
- If your browser says "Do Not Track", nothing is sent at all.
- These notes are deleted after 6 months.
Who else is involved
- Google draws the map, finds places and works out routes, so your search and position are sent to Google for that.
- Brevo delivers the emails NearMe sends you, such as sign-up codes.
- Render and Aiven host the website and its database.
- News stories in Gists belong to their publishers and link back to them.
Your choices
- Turn off alerts or notifications any time from the bell.
- Change your name and photo from your profile.
- Ask the owner to delete your account and everything you added.
